This chapter explores how Muslims arriving on American soil face the question of establishing the direction toward Mecca (qibla). As America is outside the Muslim sacred canopy, it becomes a frontier that needs to be incorporated in the Muslim spatial imagination. Determination of the direction toward Mecca is an important way in which Islamic nomos are introduced into an otherwise-profane space. Unification of qibla among American Muslims is a symbolic unification of the disparate Muslim communities as well.
