This chapter examines how schools and sex education programs address rape and culpability for rape, and how students respond to these messages. Both Abstinence Only Until Marriage education (AOUME) and Comprehensive Sexuality education (CSE) programs used most of the limited curricular time dedicated to rape and sexual violence to review state and national laws that defined rape in each district. They also made clear, in one way or another, that girls were not to blame for rape, and asserted that girls could and should take steps to avoid being raped. However, AOUME activities were much less assertive about discussing rape and about the “no means no” message than were CSE programs.
