Conclusion Erotic Attunement
Conclusion Erotic Attunement
This chapter returns to the connections among sensuality, sexuality, and eroticism with which the implications of the virtue of sensual attunement for social ethics were reflected. Erotic attunement needed both an in-the-moment response and a cumulative, embodied knowledge of personality and pattern; both engagement and detachment; both present absorption in a child's need and devotion to the future trajectory of a child's virtue; both erotic desire and agapic self-gift. The lavishness and complexity of the desires and delights must be the starting point for a broad conversation that is not confined to books published by university presses. Margaret Miles was the picture of attunement, of mind-mindedness, of perceiving precisely what her children need, of desiring union with them despite being pained at their moments of disobedience and plain stupidity, of delighting in them precisely in their finitude and temporality.
