Hertz and Cathode Rays

Hertz and Cathode Rays

(p.78) 7 Hertz and Cathode Rays
Information and Experimental Knowledge

James Mattingly

University of Chicago Press

This chapter investigates attempts to replicate Hertz's cathode ray experiments by Thomson and Perrin and concludes that they did replicate them. Buchwald's and Chen's views of the situation are discussed, and the chapter establishes that the right way to think about historical cases of replication should focus on the knowledge generating capacities of the experiments rather than the material resources of the experimentalists.
