Nadia Boulanger lectured regularly on Beethoven’s string quartets, and prepared extended analyses of the quartets for use in her classes. This chapter presents a selection of her analytical work prepared for a lecture series at the Longy School in 1940-41. Cédric Segond-Genovesi’s introduction shows how Boulanger’s analytical toolkit was a multifaceted instrument whose sources range from the French treatises employed at Boulanger’s beloved Paris Conservatoire to a international texts whose variety provides evidence of her intellect and curiosity.
