From the Trenches: Extracts from the Final Issue of the Paris Conservatory Gazette
During World War I, Nadia and Lili Boulanger edited a newsletter, the Gazette des classes de compositions du Conservatoire, which aimed to connect musicians of the Conservatoire de Paris who had been mobilised into armed service. The final issue, sent out in June 1918, featured responses to a questionnaire about the future shape of Parisian musical culture, offering a unique window on the musical ideas and realities of musician-soldiers in World War I. Annegret Fauser’s introduction and notes to a translated selection of responses places them in the context of contemporary debates on the programming of new music and German music in the wake of conflict.
