Gabriele Baldini, a distinguished Anglicist, dealt with Verdi's operas as a professional theater critic who understood a great deal about music. This chapter examines Abitare la battaglia, an incomplete posthumous work by Baldini that offers an idea of Verdi's theater and a theory of Verdian dramaturgy. It also poses the question of whether Baldini's analyses have a professional value for today's musicologists.
