This chapters introduces readers to Sister Ava and her mosque community in South Central Los Angeles. Believers like Ava see Islam as a way of life that offers a blueprint for individual and collective action promising greater social, economic, and political progress. These collective actions enable members to further a project of religious self-making that bonds African American Muslim women and men together. Piety in this mosque community involves the cultivation of virtues that must be achieved through engagement with others.
