In January 1952, Douglas's physical and mental decline reached a crisis point. His hosts, Kenneth Macpherson and Islay Lyons, were growing increasingly desperate. On February 5, Douglas took a fatal dose of painkillers. He died two days later. Macpherson and Lyons covered up his suicide. As soon as Douglas was dead, his friends lionized his memory. The island of Capri held a momentous funeral. But conflicts over Douglas's memory began straight away. In the obituary pages, critics of Douglas battled his defenders. A few friends tried to capture the unsettling mixture of bad and good in his life. Martha Gordon Crotch called him the "world's best bad man." Bryher also struggled to write about him honestly.
