Between his first arrest in 1916 and his second arrest in 1936, Douglas constantly kept one eye over his shoulder, looking out for the police. They nearly came for him in Capri, but Faith Mackenzie intervened. There were several times when the atmosphere in Florence grew so tense that Douglas felt compelled to flee. In Ischia, he faced extortion threats and the hostile stares of local men who tried to stop him from mixing with the local boys. Child prostitution may have been common in interwar Italy, but it functioned beyond the bounds of social acceptability. It was clearly outside the charmed circle, as Gayle Rubin put it....
