After he completed his education, Norman Douglas joined the British Foreign Office and was posted by request to St. Petersburg, Russia. Building on the interest in zoology he had developed as a school boy, Douglas published his earliest essays in German and in English natural science periodicals. He fashioned an identity as a sexual libertine, pursuing sexual affairs with girls, women, and boys across the social spectrum. But when he impregnated a young woman from a powerful family, Douglas was forced to flee Russia. He took leave from the Foreign Office and moved to Italy, ending his diplomatic career.
