This chapter describes the discoveries that heightened further the sense of the sheer strangeness of the living world of the deep past, which include Buckland's megalosaur, Mantell's giant herbivore and iguanodon, and the Stonesfield marsupials. Buckland's megalosaur and Mantell's iguanodon were based on fragmentary remains, and their reconstruction as gigantic lizards was much less certain, although they did suggest that the ancient reptilian fauna had included not only marine but also terrestrial (or at least “amphibious”) forms.

Keywords:   megalosaur, giant herbivore, iguanodon, marsupials, fossils, ancient reptilian fauna
