Making Natural Selection Safe for Reductionists

Making Natural Selection Safe for Reductionists

(p.177) 6 Making Natural Selection Safe for Reductionists
Darwinian Reductionism
University of Chicago Press

This chapter addresses the untenable dualism between biology's acceptance of physicalism and its apparent autonomy that untenable dualism directly and tries to show how the reductionist can learn to stop worrying and love Darwinism as a purely physical process. It begins by reviewing in greater detail the argument given briefly in the Introduction, that the ruling orthodoxy of physicalism and antireductionism is untenable. It then shows how the reductionist can assimilate the theory of natural selection to an unproblematical place in physical science.
