This chapter argues that the sudden success of molecular developmental biology will turn reductionism from an exercise in philosophical handwaving into “normal science.” It shows that before molecular developmental biology there were no explanations of embryological development at all, let alone ones fully or even partially adequate. The first part of the chapter illustrates the success already achieved by molecular developmental biology. The second part responds to the arguments of those who would deny the promise or indeed even the achievements of the explanation of development by the activity of macromolecules.
