Political Perversion: Rhetorical Aberration in the Time of Trumpeteering

Joshua Gunn

Abstract

In Political Perversion, Joshua Gunn argues that the widespread perception of a mean-spirited turn in U.S. political discourse is better reckoned as a structural perversion hastened by the speed of communication technologies. Drawing on the insights of critical theory, media ecology, and psychoanalysis, Gunn advances a theory of perverse rhetorics that not only dominates politics, but also our daily interactions with others on and through speakers and screens.

Keywords: Donald J. Trump, politics, perversion, psychoanalysis, media ecology, rhetoric, cultural studies, critical theory, Lacan, Freud
