The epilogue both summarizes the new findings of the previous chapters about Homberg, the Académie, and chemistry as a discipline and moves quickly forward in time to assess Homberg’s immediate and long-term impact on the institution and the discipline. Homberg’s new and expansive vision for the discipline seems not to have survived him at the Académie. A close census of the holders of the chemistry positions, however, shows that the institution did a very poor job of recruitment throughout the 1720s. Only in the 1730s did the situation start to improve, at which time both Homberg’s ideas and his vision for the future of the discipline were revived and pursued further.
