(p.169) Chapter 8 Fighting and Atrocities in the South Province in 1792–1793
Facing Racial Revolution
University of Chicago Press

This chapter presents an excerpt from a personal account of the fighting and atrocities in the South Province of Saint-Domingue during the years 1792 and 1793. It explains that the unknown author participated in the defense of the southern town of Tiburon against the black insurgents. This narrative describes the amateur nature of the fighting which led to heavy losses on both sides and provides a detailed description of a race-based atrocity committed by whites, particularly the attempt to murder several hundred free colored men.
