A Child's Memories of the Last Days of Saint-Domingue

(p.329) Chapter 17 A Child's Memories of the Last Days of Saint-Domingue
Facing Racial Revolution
University of Chicago Press

This chapter presents an excerpt from Elie-Benjamin-Joseph Brun-Lavainne's account of the last days of Saint-Domingue. Brun-Lavainne must have been among the last living French witnesses to the Haitian Revolution being only about 12 years old in 1803. His recollection describes the harmonious relations among the races, particularly between whites and the mixed-race population and confirms Vicomte de Rochambeau's love affair with a beautiful creole woman that forms the plot of Leonora Sansay's autobiographical novel Secret History.
