The Age of the World Picture, 1925–45
Chapter 4 is the "image" counterpart to the argument presented in Chapter 3. The chapter shows how images around 1945 had a summarizing, stabilizing quality parallel to the culture of happy summary discussed in the previous chapter. Topics include Hollywood film, popular magazines, documentary photographs, celebrity photography, photojournalism including war photography, developments in painting including Abstract Expressionism, and philosophical writing about art and images.
