This chapter examines the efforts of a set of African American churches to redevelop the four neighborhoods in New York City through the services of church-associated agencies, primarily community development corporations (CDCs). The activity churches in Harlem, Bedford-Stuyvesant, South Jamaica, and Morrisania chartered CDCs to address neighborhood needs, to manifest their faith, and to expand their provision of social welfare services. The African Americans also called for government action through their churches.
