Alphonso Lingis

University of Chicago Press

The first American school of art began in Qosqo after Pizarros’s conquest of Peru. Monks set up workshops to train local people in painting pictures to adorn churches and monasteries. In the 17th century, the painters began painting series of angels, depicted in Spanish garb and bearing arms. What is the difference between artworks on topics or narratives from myths and artworks that themselves concentrate sacred power?

Keywords:   Qosqo school, angels bearing arms, sacred objects
