This chapter examines Hobbes’s account of sovereignty and the commonwealth with the aim of highlighting its most novel and important features, especially those that bear on the problem of religion in politics. Hobbes’s political vision goes beyond a simple Erastianism that would have the state control religion; his more radical hope was for a political order that would become progressively more secular as the political power of religion faded away. Hobbes is shown here to have been a forefather of modern secularism.
