This chapter draws on Foucault’s Birth of Biopolitics to trace a. the emergence of biopower as a new form of power, oriented toward the government of populations, one that requires a different rationality of government, namely management, and a different kind of knowledge, namely, political economy; b. the birth of political economy as a discourse of truth; c. the transformation of the role and place of the market, and of its relation to the state; d. the emergence of the homo economicus, or the individual as a subject of interests and desires.
