This chapter presents the human context within which to understand the Amboseli elephants. It describes the people of Amboseli, the Maasai, focusing on aspects of Maasai history and culture that have contributed to the coexistence of the Maasai and wildlife. The chapter also describes the conservation and development initiatives that have defined the Maasai's use of the Amboseli ecosystem over time and have influenced Maasai attitudes toward wildlife and conservation. The challenges of conserving the Amboseli elephants within a landscape of changing land use and land tenure in the Amboseli ecosystem are discussed.
