The Amboseli elephants have a long history of coexistence with the Maasai. The current range of the elephants extends well beyond the boundaries of Amboseli National Park into land that is soon to be subdivided into individual plots and which was previously owned communally by the Maasai as group ranch land. The land outside the protected area is dotted with Maasai settlements and is used by the Maasai for grazing livestock and, where water is available, to grow a variety of crops. Some of the land is also leased to tourist operators. This chapter aims to describe how the Amboseli elephants use areas of Maasai settlement, share sources of water with the Maasai, and respond to meeting Maasai in their range.
