Filled with the Spirit

This chapter looks closely at a number of dimensions of memory and nostalgia as they affect the spiritual experience of TFAM worshipers. Elements of worship that mirror traditional practices are often called "old time" and are sought-after ritual features. Other areas of black cultural history are often invoked including discussions of food, hair-styling, and especially gospel music. The chapter explores the meaning of memory and nostalgia in TFAM, focusing on the ways they give legitimacy to what is otherwise an unusual religious setting.

Keywords:   memory, nostalgia, gospel music, African American food, the South
