This chapter presents the sixth-day experience of Jay Mechling while camping with Boy Scout Troop 49. Everyone in camp had heard about the Scouts caught trying to wade over to the Girl Scout encampment, and there was general surprise that the Scouts had not been sent home. After breakfast and the early-morning routine, Mechling decided to attend the first-aid class. The Nugget Auction took place at a troop campfire and was the occasion for the patrols to spend the points they have earned throughout the week, through daily inspections, and contests. The patrols bid their points in the auction for cookies, candy, soft drinks, popcorn, and other assorted treats. The Nugget Auction was one reason the staff kept tight control of the care packages the boys get from home.
