I was sitting in my doctor’s office waiting to be seen when news of Dylan Roof’s capture flashed across my cellphone screen. On June 17, 2015, Roof walked into a prayer service at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, and slaughtered nine African Americans. The diabolical deed was done immediately after the black congregants welcomed him into their prayer circle. An avowed white supremacist who openly expressed his racial hatred on social media, Roof plotted to use the racial mass murder to start a race war. Originally intending to take his own life to avoid prosecution, he intentionally left one of the congregants alive so that she could bear witness to his racist agenda....
