The Conclusion shows that Nietzsche understood himself to have attained the standing of the philosopher and the artist that he had earlier attributed only to others. With that attainment his writings turn explicitly autobiographical because he has to show to an age committed to a morality of equality of rights and the end of all suffering that a philosopher is possible. The Conclusion uses Nietzsche’s metaphor of ebb and flood to show how he conceived of the relation between the philosopher and the artist in himself and in culture. The 1881 workbook developed that metaphor of ebb and flood as describing the relation between knowing and affirming, each necessary, each ebbing as the other floods. This chapter shows that ebb and flood entered The Gay Science only with Nietzsche’s final changes to the proofs: it is the new law that he placed at the end of section 1, the law his “brothers” will have to understand if the new view is to replace the old law of the succession of teachings of purpose. My book ends on another late change to The Gay Science, the elevation of art: “as an aesthetic phenomenon existence is still bearable for us.”
