Archaeology and Nationalism in The History of the Romanians

Archaeology and Nationalism in The History of the Romanians

(p.127) Four Archaeology and Nationalism in The History of the Romanians
Selective Remembrances

Gheorghe Alexandru Niculescu

University of Chicago Press

This chapter examines the archaeological contribution of The History of the Romanians and its role in shaping Romanian nationalism. It shows that the archaeological knowledge in the book is normal knowledge produced within the limits of the paradigm of cultural history that supports a nationalist representation of society. This chapter also suggests that the authors of the first three volumes of The History of the Romanians have various attitudes toward its main narrative, the ethnogenesis of the Romanians and its “premises.”

Keywords:   archaeological knowledge, Romanian nationalism, cultural history, ethnogenesis
