This introductory chapter first sets out the book's purpose, which is to survey the uses of chaos theory in three particular fields: economics, legal theory, and literary studies. It provides a theoretical vocabulary and a set of critical frameworks for the rigorous examination of borrowing while also engaging with recent debates about interdisciplinary research and the relationship between the sciences and the humanities. In addition to sketching some of the problems and mistakes encountered in borrowing, it argues for the possibility of the fruitful use of chaotic dynamics in work outside the natural sciences. The chapter then spells out what the current project entails as well as what it does not address. It begins by providing some clarifications of chaos theory and borrowed knowledge. An overview of the subsequent chapters is also presented.
