This chapter explains how biodiversity is generated based on research in Madagascar. Madagascar is an example of how a unique fauna and flora evolves in a very large island when it remains almost completely isolated from the rest of the world for 100 million years. A short visit to Ranomafana National Park in November 2002 was the beginning of a research project during which much knowledge about the ecology, biogeography, and evolution of Malagasy dung beetles was accumulated. This chapter describes how new species appear in the course of evolution by focusing on Charles Darwin's work. It also considers why the total number of species is much greater in Madagascar than in Borneo by analyzing the dynamics of geographical ranges of species. Finally, it discusses innovations, range expansions, and evolutionary radiations in Madagascar.
