In this vignette, Brody recounts his research interviewing employees at the Hyatt Regency Chicago hotel. He describes the surprising contrast between his experience in the hotel’s service areas, accompanied by a union organizer, and his expulsion from a meeting between the hotel’s human resources department and housekeeping. Brody also describes how interviewing the hotel’s housekeepers helped him understand the multifaceted nature of housekeeping and the specifics of the work.
