This volume is a collection of papers that were presented at the eighteenth annual East Asia Seminar on Economics (EASE), held at Singapore Management University from June 22 to 24, 2007. The conference was organized around the theme of financial sector development in the Asia-Pacific region. This introductory chapter begins with a discussion of the recent changes in Asia's financial sectors, especially in banking and stock markets, since the Asian currency crisis of 1997 to 1998. An overview of the subsequent chapters is then presented.
