This chapter examines the political economy aspects of the services trade deregulation. It argues that the link between the objectives of policies and policy instruments is not as straightforward as economic theory suggests. This chapter also considers the various objectives for the regulation of services which are associated with foreign investment and establishment, consumer protection, social and cultural matters, and access to the services of “essential facilities.”
