On the Road
On the Road
Chapter 5 narrates the final year and a half of the Art Ensemble’s European sojourn. By the fall of 1969, word of the Art Ensemble had spread throughout the continent, and the band began venturing outside France to perform. They maintained a home base near Paris until 1970, long enough to recruit a fifth group member: percussionist Don Moye, an American who had relocated to Europe in the late 1960s. Soon after Moye came aboard, the musicians’ radical political reputation caught up with them, and local authorities forced them to leave the Paris suburbs. So they hit the road, playing concerts across France and Western Europe until the spring of 1971, when they were ready to return to the United States.
