This chapter discusses pollution emissions and deposition in urban areas, which range from smokestacks to cars and trucks shedding pollutants and stirring up roadside dust to forest fires releasing heavy metals. It introduces, among others, mercury, pesticides, and PCBs. While even the most remote areas of Earth receive depositions of human-created chemicals long after their production ceases, serious efforts in recent decades has improved air quality. These emitted pollutants deposit onto impervious surfaces which are swept clean by rainwater and carried off into streams. This chapter also covers the concept of deposition velocity, which describes how efficiently a surface strips particulates out of the air. Obstructions that reduce air speeds and create turbulence allow particulates to settle, and as a result, urban vegetation captures measurable levels of air pollutants.
