This chapter presents an investigation of how philosophers of education and education researchers might make inroads into understanding and mitigating the moral disagreement over race-conscious education policies through democratic deliberation, with an examination of a series of community dialogues facilitated on the topic of affirmative action in the context of an anti-affirmative action state ballot initiative in Colorado. Moral and political theories are applied to the analysis of these data to examine the relationship between moral disagreement, education policy, and public dialogue. This includes analyses of questionnaires and follow-up interviews with dialogue participants. These dialogues provide a promising method for members of the community to better understand each other’s moral and political values and positions, without necessarily coming to consensus.
