Provides an introduction to the volume, both process and substance. Rather than collecting essays from contributors and ordering them in an edited volume, the essays in this volume emerged from an interdisciplinary eighteen-month long conversation about philanthropy. We brought together sociologists, political scientists, and historians with political philosophers and legal scholars. The framing question for our dialogue was to explore the origins, institutional forms, and moral grounds and limits of philanthropy in democratic societies.
