This chapter explores the senses of place and historicity that are central to Andalusi musical practice. For its practitioners, Andalusi music is an urban repertoire that comes in city-specific and regional versions. This sense of localness is closely tied to the fact that practitioners understand the repertoire to be embodied in genealogically embedded, place-specific musical authorities. At the same time, the sense of an archipelago of distinct urban musical centers is tied to the origin narrative of Andalusi music, which claims that the repertoire emerged from specific Iberian cities and was brought to the Maghrib through particular waves of Muslim and Jewish migrants. This chapter demonstrates the way in which this origin narrative is reproduced within contemporary conversations about place, genealogy, and genre, and how senses of place and historicity are central to practitioners' understanding of transmission, accumulation, authority, and collective self.
