Edicts and Interaction in Synagogue Life
Edicts and Interaction in Synagogue Life
This chapter focuses on the synagogue as a site of summoning. I trace different aspects of “Synagogue Life”—how it sets up Sabbath meals and friendships, the ways in which the micro-interactional structures of liturgy foster interaction, how the synagogue constructs and partakes in social dramas, and how people become personally necessary for public ritual. By tracing these different processes, I show the value of thinking about religious life through an interactional lens. Organizations give rise to multiple mechanisms that draw members into relationships and interaction, and thus a deeper sense of membership in the organization.
