This chapter discusses conflicts of interest in the commercialization of academic research in the U.S. It explains that the protection of people who serve as subjects of medical experiments is the main source of conflict of interest among administrators and researchers running clinical trials. But despite the problems associated with the use of human subjects, statistics from the Association of University Technology Managers reveals that universities have been spinning out wonderful inventions from their publicly supported laboratories and have been reaping income that financed even more scientific advances and rewarded deserving scientists.
