In this chapter I explore the way in which planners confront the obduracy of the material world; that is, its resistance. Two cases--one involving a redevelopment project in New York City and the other the building of Israeli settlements on land contested by the Palestinians--are used to illustrate the fraught relationship planners have with obduracy. Of particular interest is the extent to which such obduracy is embedded in the socio-materiality of the world and is thus more than just a matter of politics.
