This chapter explores the interlocking histories of French and English languages, in relation to Latin, as linguistic matrices for competing types of gendered literacy. It analyzes textual evidence that works to complicate both the minority and the majority modern views of standard languages and suggests that the minority view has much more to offer the feminist cultural historian than the majority view does. This chapter traces how and when written standard language impinged on oral language uses.
