Introduction
This book explores how scanner data can enhance price measurement. Scanner data provide a record of virtually all transactions. Scanner data can decrease the need to measure prices for a limited number of items at a limited number of outlets. It could give new opportunities to make comparisons of levels of prices or unit values across establishments. It also pose significant challenges for economic and index number theory. The use of scanner data needs the participation and cooperation of private firms. The availability of more data does not always lead to better analysis. The electronic economy produces a flood of information. In addition, the scanner data present challenges for mapping transactions data into price index numbers. An overview of the chapters included in this book is finally given.
