Body
Body
American Christians have cultivated the experience of emptiness through physical disciplines that cognize and represent that feeling it while fostering it. Fasting empties the body of food, silence removes words from the throat, labor forces sweat from the body, bloodletting drains blood, and other physical disciplines play similar roles. All such disciplines are forms of self-denial. They empty the self. Whites vicariously experienced emptiness through their participation in the emptying of colored bodies of blood, sweat, and culture. The pursuit of the empty body and empty self invites deep collaboration with a capitalist culture of commodities and commoditization.
