This chapter explains the sudden collapse of the cycling city in the late 1890s. The role of automobiles, streetcars, municipal management, and the limitations of the bicycle itself are all considered. Particular attention is given to the evolution of the bicycle in terms of its fashionableness. The fate of American cities is also contrasted internationally, with several examples from around the globe.
