The Commuters
This chapter highlights forms of practical cycling, particularly commuting. Through a series of traffic counts, it examines the popularity of bicycle commuting. Those data from late-nineteenth-century American cities are compared to other cities across time and space. The relative popularity of commuting via streetcars versus the bicycle is also examined.
