Using Claire Denis’ film Beau travail as its major example, this chapter examines the possibility of a nonsadistic type of movement. Beau travail opposes a murderous sibling rivalry to a fraternal sociability embodied in the choreographed exercises of the film’s Legionnaires. Denis establishes both the natural landscape, the natives of Djibouti (and, implicitly, the spectators) as witnesses of this sensual, nonsexual community.
