In the first decades of the thirteenth century, as great Gothic cathedrals were rising in many northern cities, an attentive traveller, delighted with what he witnessed, gathered images not only of flora and fauna, but also of human forms, carpentry devices, sculptural elements and buildings. Such was the immediate force of his “virtual reality” images that others joined his enterprise and written explanations were added in order to lend the appearance of a pedagogical mission. With the “Villard de Honnecourt Enterprise” we catch a glimpse of the human environment--the habitus--that lay behind the propagation of “Gothic.”
